Robert Cumins was born in January 1921 and joined the RAF in June 1940. He trained as a Flight Mechanic and worked as an Engine Fitter at Sydenham, Maghaberry, Long Kesh and Nutts Corner. After his squadron moved to York, Robert was sent to North Africa where he was involved in the repair of Spitfires at Blida, Algeria. William Moore (83 years of age) probably the oldest serviceman in the Lisburn Parade. William served in the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles and took part in the D Day landings and was wounded in Belgium in 1944. Robert Cumins

Robert Cumins was born in January 1921 and joined the RAF in June 1940. He trained as a Flight Mechanic and worked as an Engine Fitter at Sydenham, Maghaberry, Long Kesh and Nutts Corner. After his squadron moved to York, Robert was sent to North Africa where he was involved in the repair of Spitfires at Blida, Algeria.

Robert’s brother, leading aircraftman Oliver Cumins, lost his life in an aeroplane crash just over two miles away from the RAF base at Pwlleli, North Wales. Oliver, born in April 1916, joined the RAF in January 1941 and was training as an observer. He was an official of the Ulster Bank Ltd., and had been a member of the head office and Enniskillen Branch staffs. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He is buried in Lisburn Cemetry.

Robert and Oliver are sons of late Mr and Mrs J M Cumins, of Carnbane House, Lisburn.
