STUART Millar and Bryan Craig, both students in Lisburn, have taken first and second place in the UK SkiIIFRIDGE Competition held in Birmingham.

SkiIlFRIDGE is the national refrigeration and air conditioning practical skills competition designed to promote standards and skills in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.

Already winners after enjoying success in the regional SkillBuild competition, Stuart and Bryan were tasked with installing a complex refrigeration system into a butcher's cold room. Grading was given on the accuracy of pipe work installation and electrical circuitry, as well as handling of refrigerants at low temperatures.

Stuart, a third year apprentice employed by Shilliday Refrigeration and trained at the Lisburn campus of SERC, took first place after a closely judged competition.

"I can't believe I've won" he said. "I certainly wasn't expecting to win...it was anyone's game. The standard of work was very high. It's been very interesting and exciting, and the prizes are just amazing! I would highly recommend the competition to anyone thinking of entering next year. I thought it was worthwhile and a really good experience."

John Nixon, Head of School for Construction and Engineering Services at SERC commented: "Taking gold and silver medals at a national competition is something to be proud of and I hope they cherish this achievement for a long time.

"They are a credit to the College, their families and their employers, I have no doubt that they will continue to develop their skills within the industry and will have very successful careers."
