SEVERAL pupils from The Wallace High School have recently returned from representing their country or province in recent representative fixtures.

Kyle McCall, the Firsts Rugby captain played for the Irish Schools' XV in the Five Nations Schools' Tournament held recently in Wales and played in games versus Wales and England.

Commenting on the tournament Kyle said: "To follow in the footsteps of players like Chris Henry, lan Whitten and Nevin Spence and play against rugby power houses like Wales and England has capped off a terrific season which started last summer on the school tour to South Africa. I just hope that I can follow further in their steps and go on to play for Ulster in the coming years."

Peter MacDonnell and Richard Arneill played for the Ulster under 21 hockey team in the recent inter-pro series held in Dublin and both acquitted themselves very well. Assistant coach David Smyth (himself a distinguished former Irish international) was hearty in his praise for both players: "The management and coaching team have been really impressed with both boys attitude and skill level. To make the step up to under 21s whilst still at school is commendable and augurs well for their future. It was also a great shame that Stephen Hunter couldn't make it through injury as I'm sure he too would have been an invaluable player at this level."

Peter's sister Lisa MacDonnell and fellow Year 11 pupil Steffi Baron also represented the Ulster under 16 B team in their annual fixture versus their Leinster counterparts and were unlucky to lose 2-1, whilst Sophie McClean, Lauren Wilson and Rachel Morrow were in the Ulster under 18 B squad which defeated Leinster 3-2 in a real thriller of a game. Teacher Linda Coughlan continued her rise through the umpiring ranks and, having recently umpired the Irish Junior Cup final in Dublin, also officiated at the matches in Dublin involving the Ulster squads.
