Sarah looks forward to summer in `Oklahoma'

by JULIE-ANN SPENCE

Sarah Kay17-year-old Sarah Kay from Lisburn has been selected for a role in this summer's professional musical production of Oklahoma at the Theatre at The Mill in Newtownabbey which takes to the stage in August.

Set against the backdrop of ranching Oklahoma this fun musical tells the tale of love and rivalry between cowboys and farmers on the prairie and is directed by Northern Ireland's leading musical theatre directors Peter Corry and Wilson Shields with international choreographer Fleur Mellor.

The smash hit musical showcases the cream of Northern Ireland's top young performers who had to compete in an extensive audition to win one of the prized 40 places to star in the musical.

Sarah, currently studying Music at AS level at Friends School, hopes to become a primary school teacher specialising in music.

"Oklahoma is one of my favourite musicals," explained Sarah, who is also a member of Lisburn's very successful youth theatre company Fusion. "Having previously worked with Peter Corry in last year's sell out production of Les Miserables at Theatre at the Mill I couldn't miss out on this opportunity to again work with some of the most renowned professionals in the industry.

"I love the incredible experience of being on stage performing and look forward to developing my singing skills further."

Rehearsals for Oklahoma start at the end of July and with so little time to pull the show together, Sarah says the timescale really helps her to focus. "We are all very excited about starting again. We rehearse every day and that is part of the experience. When you have so little time you have to focus" she said.

Saddle up this summer for Oklahoma, the perfect family getaway at Theatre at the Mill, running from Friday August 12 to Saturday August 20. Tickets start at just £9 and are available to book online at www.theatreatthemill.com or from the Box Office on 028 9034 0202.
