The Lisburn Branch of the Royal British Legion held their Remembrance Day Service in Lisburn Cathedral last Sunday morning (9th November). The Vicar, the Rev Ken McGrath, conducted the service and the preacher was the Rector, the Rev Canon Sam Wright.

The Rt Worshipful the Mayor, Councillor Ronnie Crawford and the Rt Hon Jeffrey Donaldson MP MLA read the Scripture lessons and the act of remembrance was led by Major J Jamieson and Adam Cregan, a member of Lisburn Young Defenders Flute Band. The Cathedral music group and singers led the worship that included Crown Him with many thorns, The Lords my shepherd, Immortal, invisible, Trust and obey, In Christ alone and Be Thou my vision.

Recollecting on a momentous week in which we have seen the election of a new American President with his slogan Yes we can, Canon Wright spoke of the unexpected person who comes to the front and leads like Barrack Obama. However all leaders need a team and when we invite God on our team then we too can say, Yes we can. Referring to the Scripture readings he explained that God chose Gideon, the least significant person of the least significant tribe to lead the chosen army of 300 to achieve victory not attributed to man but to the power of God. Just like the many who paid the ultimate sacrifice during two World Wars, he concluded by speaking of the ultimate sacrifice paid by Jesus saying Yes we can bring the change that matters in our lives if we simply trust in the saving love of Jesus.
