Local churches unite for Women's World Day of Prayer

A worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions, observe a common World Day of Prayer each year.  Churches in the Lisburn City Council area united on Friday evening 2nd March for interdenominational services in Magheragall Parish, Holy Trinity - Aghalee, Kilwarlin Moravian, Christ Church - Derriaghy, St John's - Dromara and Cairnshill Methodist.  The theme was 'United Under God's Tent' and the service of prayers, readings and hymns was prepared by women of Paraguay.  The hymns included 'Bind us together, Lord', 'Give thanks with a grateful heart', 'Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing' and 'The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended'.

Magheragall
Women from up to twenty-five churches in the Lisburn area took part in the service at Magheragall Parish Church last Friday night.  Bronwen Dark led the service and the speaker was Heather Forbes.  The readers, including those who attended services at Thompson House and Blaris Fold, were Zoe McAllistair, Aileen Dixon, Ray Moore, Julie Rodgers, Margaret Nelson, Grace Park and Rosemary Heaslip (Magheragall Parish), Lindsay Ireland (Magheragall Presbyterian), Bridie Conlon and Joan Goodman (St Colman's Derriaghy), Martie Kennedy (Lisburn Cathedral), Rosaleen Lennon (St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church), Irene Tate (Lambeg Parish), Winnie Ferguson (St Columba's Presbyterian and Methodist), Jacquie Brackenridge, Elizabeth Watt and Joyce Moran (First Lisburn Presbyterian), Elizabeth Scott (Religious Society of Friends), Anne Patterson (Seymour Street Methodist), Mae Moreland (St. Mark's Parish) and Oriel Gamble (St. Paul's Parish).

Aghalee
Women from the parishes of Aghalee, Ballinderry, Moira, Maghaberry, Magheralin and Aghagallon took part in the World Day of Prayer service in Holy Trinity Parish Church, Aghalee.  Mrs Heidi Doogan led the service and the speaker was Hannah Collins, who has spent time in Paraguay.  Hannah also gave an interesting power point presentation showing the children and people she worked with during her time there.  The readers, representing all corners of the parish, were - Anne Lavery, Alison McMahon, Elaine Davis, Andrea Huff, Eleanor Hamill, Carol Beckett, Margaret Robertson, Benni McLorn, Joanne Watson, Sandra Murray and Elizabeth Reid.

Kilwarlin

Women from Kilwarlin Moravian, St Colman's - Reilly's Trench, Broomhedge Methodist, Priesthill Methodist, Maze Presbyterian, Hillsborough Presbyterian, Hillsborough Parish, Eglantine Parish, St James's - Lower Kilwarlin and St John's - Upper Kilwarlin took part in the service in Kilwarlin Moravian Church.  Mrs Hilda Law led the service and the speaker was Mrs Carol Ackah.  The readers were Elma Leeburn, Marjorie Murphy and Annie Wilkinson (Hillsborough Presbyterian), Norah Henry (Maze Presbyterian), Barbara Wallace (Priesthill Methodist), Gladys Boyes (Broomhedge Methodist), Freda Mercer and Joyce Murdock (St John's), June Kilpatrick and Margaret Walsh (St James's), Alison Leckey (Eglantine Parish) and Geraldine Gamble (Hillsborough Parish).

In her address based on the theme 'United Under God's Tent' Carol Ackah spoke of the symbols of the tent ' Open and welcoming, shelter and refuge, flexible, expandable and portable.  In her development of the theme she explained that we just can't hide under God's tent and emphasised the need to unite under it and take the Christian message to the world.

Derriaghy, Dromara and Cairnshill
Ss for other churches in the Lisburn City Council area were held at Christ Church - Derriaghy, St John's - Dromara and Cairnshill Methodist.
