Memo If you had asked me 10 years ago if I would be sitting for hours waiting for a buzzard to land or for an otter to appear it would have been a resounding no. But it's amazing how when you start to take notice of what is around you how things really start to matter. My interest is definitely in animals and people. I care what happens to them.
As a wildlife artist I have been privileged to travel some amazing places, Canada, the States, Finland. In 2005 I travelled to the Canadian Rockies. It was an amazing trip, seeing grizzly bears, elk, deer, moose, nesting osprey and bald eagles. However some of the most memorable sights have been at home or in Scotland proving you don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to experience special times in wildlife. It is often the time when you least expect , when something happens. One evening I watched while an otter fished about 20 metres away. Another time when visiting Scotland, I saw 3 red squirrels, spotted woodpecker and pheasant all within 6 square metres and all at the same time!! Sometimes the sight of the most common of animals stays in your memory too, like the little mouse clinging to the blade of grass or meeting a fox eye to eye for that spilt second.

Memo Since opening its doors on 23 December 1895, the Grand Opera House has delivered an unrivalled programme of entertainment, playing host to some of the greatest names in theatre and music.
Designed by the prolific theatrical architect Frank Matcham, the theatre was a huge success from the outset, hosting a vibrant programme of opera, drama, pantomime, or the latest London comedy or musical.
By the 1920s and 1930s, variety events dominated the schedule, and during the Second World War, the venue became a repertory theatre, hosting special Christmas and New Year performances.
When peace finally did arrive, the Grand Opera House was at the centre of the celebrations, hosting Gala Performances by the Savoy Players for General Eisenhower, and Field Marshalls Alanbrooke and Montgomery.
With the introduction of television in the 1950s, the theatre suffered significantly and although the venue continued to present live shows, its acquisition by the Rank Organisation led to a new use as a cinema. This proved ultimately unsuccessful and in 1972, at the height of the troubles, the shutters came down on the ‘Matcham Masterpiece.’
With demolition looking a certainty in 1974, the Grand Opera House became the first building in Belfast to be listed as being of historical and architectural importance, and when, in 1976, it was acquired by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, its future was finally assured.
After a massive restoration project, the doors reopened in 1980, and the theatre became a catalyst for the regeneration of Belfast city centre. Since then, Northern Ireland’s premiere theatre has welcomed some of the world's top ballet and theatre companies.
Although badly damaged by IRA bomb attacks in 1991 and again in 1993, the Grand Opera House bounced back on both occasions, continuing to host an array of theatre royalty and the prestigious BAFTA Award Ceremony in March 1994.
Extended in 2006, the original façade has been joined by a striking addition to Belfast’s skyline, home to a smaller performance space, The Baby Grand, plus the Luciano's Café Bar and the Hippodrome Restaurant. This development heralds the beginning of yet another journey in what has been a ‘dramatic’ life so far.

Memo I am always being asked where did the name Bakerloo Junction originate.
It came from a map of the London underground. Don't try and find the location as it doesn't exist. There is a Bakerloo Line but no junction. For the past 35 years people have been trying to find Bakerloo Junction.
There was a good reason for the name when I formed the group back in 1974. I wanted to perform on the local cabaret scene. Cabaret Clubs would have been very reluctant to book a folk duo. The name Bakerloo Junction put them off the scent. It only took one performance in a club to convince them that we were an acceptable cabaret act. A folk duo arriving dressed in velvet jackets with bow ties and black patent shoes was most unusual and very impressive.
In 1974 I compared a summer season in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle. I was convinced that a folk duo would be successful on the cabaret circuit.
The second member of the act was Michael Keery. Mike was a lovely singer and a good guitarist and banjo player.
I can remember the Saturday afternoon in Lisburn when my wife Pat escorted us around various shops looking for our new outfits. Mike thought we were mad. I have many happy memories of the numerous shows I did with Michael.
Our main agent was Billy McCullough (Cuckles). His first booking for us was the Abercorn Club in Belfast - WHOW!! Bakerloo hits the big time. Mr 10% Billy was a real character. It was a pleasure to pay him his money just for the fun.
We performed on the cabaret circuit until most of the social clubs disappeared due to firms closing down. By this time a number of other contacts had been established and we enjoyed the very best in local venues.
Our next break was being introduced to Emerald Records. We were invited to the recording studio where Mervyn Solomon and George Doherty (studio manager) listened to us singing a few songs. They were impressed - I should think so. The next thing we knew we were offered a recording contract. Here we go! Here we go!
